NJEA recommends that all members consider this important insurance coverage, particularly in the event you
use up all of your sick time.

NJEA Income Protection Program (Disability Income and Critical Illness Insurance), issued by The
Prudential Insurance Company of America, makes it easy to help protect your paycheck. It’s more affordable
than you may think, and coverage is guaranteed, with no health questions required—but only during this
special open enrollment from November 4, 2021–January 8, 2022.

The Importance of Disability Income and Critical Illness Insurance

If you can’t work due to an accident, illness, mental health, or pregnancy, the benefits you receive can help you
pay for things like rent or mortgage, health insurance premiums, childcare, car payments, and college tuition
until you get back on your feet.

The main difference between the plans is how funds are distributed to you. Disability Insurance gives you a
monthly income for most any situation, while Critical Illness Insurance pays a lump sum benefit for special
critical conditions where initial expenses tend to be higher.

A critical illness, such as cancer or heart attack, is not only a devastating physical blow, but it can be a severe
financial one as well. Even with health insurance, out-of-pocket medical and non-medical expenses such as
deductibles, co-pays, over-the-counter medications, and home accommodations can really cause financial
strain.

Enrolling in these plans, together or separately, may help protect your paycheck and give your family peace of
mind.
